Lumbar Spine (Low Back) Procedures

MINIMALLY INVASIVE LUMBAR INTERBODY FUSION (MIS TLIF)

Dr. Larson has pioneered advances in the MIS TLIF technique, has intellectual properties in minimally invasive approaches for spine surgery. MIS TLIF is safer, faster, with less blood loss, lower infection rate, and with faster recovery than the traditional open lumbar fusion techniques. Dr. Larson has patents related to MIS TLIF, conducts research on the procedure, and teaches the technique nationally. Dr. Larson now offers MIS TLIF as an outpatient surgery.

LUMBAR ARTIFICIAL DISC REPLACEMENT SURGERY

Dr. Larson performs lumbar artificial disc replacement surgery to treat symptomatic degenerative disc disease and disc herniation with low back pain and lower extremity symptoms. The procedure differs from a lumbar fusion in that the artificial disc stabilizes the spine while preserving motion. The ideal patient is generally earlier in the degenerative disc cascade than the fusion patient.

ANTERIOR LUMBAR FUSION SURGERY

Jeffrey J. Larson, M.D. performs an anterior lumbar interbody fusion, or ALIF. ALIF is an effective method to restore disc height to a collapsed or degenerative disc. Dr. Larson demonstrates the technique of using a stand-alone interbody cage system in place of a traditional cage and plate in this video.

LATERAL LUMBAR FUSION SURGERY (XLIF)

Dr. Larson performs a minimally invasive lumbar fusion using an XLIF approach from the side of the body. XLIF, or lateral lumbar fusion is generally used to treat conditions in the mid-lumbar spine. Technical advances in minimally invasive spine surgery are now making this approach an option in other areas of the spine. For example, a variation of this technique is sometimes applicable to treat thoracic spine problems taking away the need for a thoracotomy procedure.

PreviousNext MINIMALLY INVASIVE LUMBAR DISCECTOMY

Jeffrey J. Larson, M.D. performs a microdiscectomy by trans-tubular approach. This proven minimally invasive technique preserves important spinal musculature vs. an open lumbar discectomy that generally requires stripping of the muscles from the spine. Dr. Larson now performs microdiscectomy, laminectomy and foraminotomy, and even lumbar fusion through the trans-tubular approach.

SPINAL INJECTIONS

Board-certified physiatrist, Dr. Ludwig, performs selective spinal injections including epidural steroids, selective nerve root blocks, facet blocks, and SI joint injections at CDA Spine. “These injections are used for diagnostic purposes and therapeutic purposes.
